A newsboy hat is a rounded cap with a short brim in the front. The original news boy hats had a button or snap to fasten the front part of the cap down to the brim. It allowed the hat to be worn in two different ways, opened or closed. When closed, the hat resembled a flat cap that we often relate to golfers. However, not all modern newsboy caps have a fastener and so they remain in the open position with the dome forming a rounded cap and the short bill straight out to the front.
It’s interesting to note that while we often relate this charming style to newsboys, the caps have gone by many other names. Among the names are Eight Panel, Cabbie, Jay Gatsby and Baker Boy.
